Gymnast Nia Dennis Kicked Off the 2021 Met Gala with This Impressive Routine

The 22-year-old athlete should have earned a gold medal for Monday's fierce performance.

During the Met Gala on Monday night, Nia Dennis, a 22-year-old gymnast, delivered an awe-inspiring performance right on the steps of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event commemorated the "In America: Lexicon of Fashion" exhibit. The viral sensation known for her Black culture-celebrating routine was seen donning a glittery blue bodysuit created by Adidas in collaboration with Stella McCartney. Accompanied by the tunes of Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk" played by the Brooklyn United Marching Band along with other popular hits, Dennis showcased stunning leaps and splits. This spectacle could arguably be the most outstanding Met Gala entrance to date.

Discussing her performance alongside the marching band at the 2021 Met Gala, Dennis confessed to Vogue about how the energetic group, attired in vibrant red, white, and blue outfits, filled her with an overwhelming sense of excitement. Their fervor was so infectious that it made her want to deliver a similarly explosive performance.

Vogue reported that Dennis carefully chose gymnastic moves for Monday's event, that could be safely executed both on the mat and on the stairs. The selected moves included a layout following a cartwheel-back-handspring combination.

After the spectacular show, Dennis quickly slipped into a diamond-studded gown by Adidas and Stella McCartney over her bodysuit, before joining the gala. She expressed her disbelief at the surreal experience to Vogue. She further added her thrill in bringing her sport to the forefront at the Met Gala, considering gymnastics is not a widely followed sport.

Dennis delivered an extraordinary exhibition that, along with her commanding fashion sense, received high praises from her fellow gymnast, Laurie Hernandez. The 21-year-old sports star expressed her admiration for Dennis in an Instagram Story update on Monday, saying: "I KNOW THATS RIGHT!! LFGGGG @niaadennis." Dennis expressed her gratitude, responding to Hernandez's post with "LAURIEEEE" followed by heart emojis. If the Met Gala were a competition, there's no doubt that Dennis would have secured the top spot.
